by medicinemusic, posted 26/12/09 18:03:12   » The Medicine Show On The Road

Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams are the most played band on the Medicine Show last year and "The Great Unraveled" is an album of our time and one of the best of 2009, I'm delighted to anounce they are playing their first Scottish Show at this years Celtic Connection and The Medicine Show will be there to record it for later broadcast.

Celtic Connections Festival
O2 ABC
300 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow G2 3JA
Scotland

Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York in the late 90's, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams is one of the best known and loved bands in their home state, singled out as Hudson Valley Magazine's "Band of the Year" for the past 3 years. On stage they create an enchanting atmosphere, using traditional folk instruments, tasty electric guitar and the distinctive singing and songwriting of Joziah Longo. Citing influences as diverse as Hank Williams, Dylan, Bowie, Incredible String Band and early Pink Floyd, Longo describes the band's music as "punk-classical-hillbilly-Floyd", a mental rollercoaster of whimsical, thought-provoking songs. The Circus' live shows are where the real magic comes down, earning them critical acclaim as well as a fiercly loyal following. Their last studio release, "Flapjacks From The Sky" has been hailed as a masterpiece by many and continues to make a buzz internationally as a great americana work of art. Their newest cd, "The Great Unravel" was released in August, 2008. They were introduced to the UK at Rhythm Fest 2008 and where invited back instamntly for 2009, now they are to debute in Scotland at Celtic Connections.

The Medicine Show is delighted to be exclusivly recording this show for Pod/Video/Broadcast, on Nevis Radio, Loch Broom FM, AF Collective and UKcountryradio.com with a special interview feature on Flyinshoe Review scheduled for February.

The Medicine Shows is having a Little Feat Day

join Rob Ellen On Wednesday 9th December on UKCountryRadio.com 8pm and Nevis Radio at 10pm GMT to celebrate the music of one of the all time great bands. This will be tied in with a video feature on Flyinshoes Review a podcast on podomatic and features a House Concert which we recorded at Square Wheels House Concerts last month, with the Little Feat Guitar Duo plus interviews with Paul Barrera and Fred Tackett as well as delving into the riches of music that makes up Little Feat past and present.

Little Feat are a seminal rock band that came to prominence in the 70's by bringing all the strands and history of American music into one melting pot and serving a mighty meal of modern music that has effected the lives of music fans around the world ever since. These days the band still produce great albums and tour the world playing festivals and concert halls in all the major cities, they even have their own fan festival every year at a holiday resort in Negril Jamaica where they take over a beach and its hotel for two weeks. In-between times Paul Barrera and Fred Tackett (The Little Feat Guitar Duo) also release albums and tour the world as "The Little Feat Guitar Duo", perhaps reaching the places the band can't reach.

I got the chance to witness one of these at Steve and Clancy McDonalds Square Wheels House Concert in Strathpeffer in November 2009. and this is your chance to hear that concert exclusively for The Medicine Show.

The Coal Porters Square Wheels House Concert 29th October

by medicinemusic, posted 16/11/09 22:05:27   » The Medicine Show On The Road

The Coal Porters. Sid Griffin, www.sidgriffin.com the band’s leader and mandolin player, was a leader in the Paisley Underground of the ‘80s with the Long Ryders, one of the founding fathers of alt-country. Griffin moved to the UK and formed the Coal Porters, a vehicle for his love of the Byrds- and Gram Parsons-influenced roots rock. Over the years, the Coal Porters have evolved into The UK's top traditional bluegrass outfit. Griffin is also an author and music historian, penning such books as Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan, The Band, and the Basement Tapes and Gram Parsons: A Musical Biography, taking the story to the small screen as a BBC TV documentry.

We find him here relaxing before a show at The Square Wheels House Concert in Strathppeffer in the Highlands of Scotland, in conversation with Rob Ellen of the Medicine Show.

Nevis radio Medicine Show 18th November 10pm.
“Rosenthal can draw you into his lyrics much the same way that James Taylor and Don Henley can”.
“Take Jackson Brownes’ personal confessions and wrap them in Kris Kristofferson’s world weary tales of broken relationships and you have an idea of what to expect from Tokyo Rosenthal.”
“This is Americana with real teeth in the lyrics”

Are some of the reviews.

This level of acclaim wasn’t an overnight trip. Hardly, as “Toke” has spanned the music scene for three decades. But it’s most recently that recognition has finally reached hit home, through the recording of his CD, “One Score And Ten”.

Always writing and always gigging, his musical journey continues. He joins me on The Medicine Show during his tour and returns to play in Ullapool at The Argyll Hotel 20th November.
