thanks to all of you who came out to the UK shows

thanks to all of you who came out to the UK shows, a string of capacity and sell out shows was a warm welcome back. Jeremy Searle posted a very flattering review of the Nottingham show up at Americana UK:

Thanks again to jon redfern http://www.jonredfern.com/ and Patrick Durkan for the emotional and musical support!

It was great to meet and travel with fellow labelmates. Check them out and buy their records.

As most of you know, the new record, off track betting is out now in the UK and Holland. Radio has been good to it, and we debuted at #3 on the euro Americana charts:

http://home.hetnet.nl/%7Enoci48/

and the Maverick / Americana UK charts

The record is getting a lot of national coverage in the Netherlands as well:

VRPO (dutch national radio) 7 of the week:

Plans are in the works for an October/November return to the UK (with a bit of a band) and the Netherlands.

While in the UK I taped a session with Barry Everrit (aka the music rhino). Which streamed on his radio show last weekend http://www.houseofmercy.net/

I also taped a session for the bob harris country program http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/bobharriscountry/

which will air March 27th. Then stream on the BBC2 website.

Plans are lining up now for the us release, in the meantime, a few American music Blogs have grabbed some samples you can hear:

Also WFUVs John Platt previewed a track on his Sunday Breakfast show.

Ok Im really excited to announce Ill be back in NY this Monday to play a show with Kevin Kinney http://www.kevnkinney.com/ Of Drivin and Cryin fame.

In 2006 I opened a show for Kevin and Slaid Cleaves at the patronaat in Harlem, Nl. The modern dutch theatres are set up like a cinema multiplex with a few different stages that share a common dressing room area. After we finished our soundcheck, (during which I found the lighting guy was surprisingly receptive to my requests for more fog on stage), we went to exit the stage via elevators up to the dressing rooms, and the doors opened to Reggae superstar Lucky Dube and his entire posse. We stepped on with our instruments still strapped to our backs, and the doors closed to the cool reception of a dozen red eyed rastas in suits. The ice was broken by Mr. Dube himself who said hey white boy, play something on dat banjo Jeffrey Richards, my musical co-conspirator, was coincidentally working on an original dub project at the time (called Fine Young Cannabis), and was quick to swing his banjo into position and launch into a skank rhythm (riddem?). Mr. Dube was needless to say bemused and started clapping along. Not wanting to break rank, the rest of the elevator joined in with crooked smiles on their faces as Lucky jumped into a soulful, dancehall version of jimmy cracked corn and I dont care. The doors opened to our dressing floor and we heard the clapping continue on up to their soundcheck on the next floor. The next part was just as surreal to see one of my musical heroes (Mr Kinney) sitting on the dressing room couch. I think I wore out the copy of Sun Tangled Angel Revival Kevin gave me that night. Since moving to new york Ive bumped into him a few times in our mutual home of Brooklyn, and am really pleased to be joining him as his guest with the country rock all stars The Madison square Gardeners (who will also back me up) at the National Underground in Manhattan this Monday night for shaynie raes truck stop.

DATE: March 24th 2008

VENUE: The National Underground

CITY: New York, NY

Biography
He has the rare ability to conjure entire vistas and characters in no more than a couple of lines. His songs are music as landscape, timeless tales that instantly take root in your mind as though they've been there forever. In fact, if Annie Proulx wrote songs she would sound like Nels Andrews." Americana UK

Nels Andrews' debut, full-length album springs from years of crossing our large country and following the stories of her marginal inhabitants. His songs are a testament to the hobos and the shadowy places in every heart. The raggle-taggle El Paso Eyepatch sprang nearly full-formed from a route 66 railroad brothel, converted to musician space. Late Sunday mornings at the Red Door led to recording in a small adobe in a forgotten section of Albuquerque. âSunday Shoes features Jeffrey Richards (Hazeldine, Vic Chestnut) on guitar and electric banjo, Chris Kitchen on bass, Heath Dauberman on drums and harmony vocals by Michelle Collins (ShineCherries), all of whom make up the El Paso Eyepatch. Nels was also joined by Brett Sparks (Handsome Family) on accordian, Jason Daniello on mandolin and lap steel, Dave Guiterrez on pedal steel and Sarah Kramer on muted trumpet.

Nels was recently invited to compete as a finalist in the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubador songwriting contest, and emerged triumphant he is proud to have been chosen as the first place winner, this year's Troubador. Similarly, he was surprised and honored to join the ranks of Lucinda Williams, Slaid Cleaves, Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett as a NewFolk winner at the 2002 Kerrville Folk Festival, running as the 'dark horse contender' according to judge David Massengill. Nels has been showcased at the 2004 Americana Music Association Convention in Nashville as well as at the North American Folk Alliance conference in winter 2006. He has also been invited to perform as an Emerging Artist at the 2006 Falconridge Folk Festival in New York.

The debut album Sunday Shoes was released nationally in Jan 05, and in the EU in Spring of that same year. Sunday Shoes was deemed by BBC 2's legendary DJ Bob Harris as an album of the year?, and went on to be listed in the top 5 of the year end Americana UK charts, as well as KRO Dutch National Radio, Altcountry NL, Ctrl Alt Country (Belgium), and the European Radio Americana Chart . Sunday Shoes continues to find itself in Top Ten albums of the year lists, almost always as the only independent release.

Nels has since shared stages across Europe with the likes of Slaid Cleaves, Kevin Kinney, The Handsome Family, and John Dee Graham, and 2005 found him playing the mainstage at Holland's TakeRoot festival, the Big Big Country festival in Glasgow, Scotland, The Orange/Vodaphone Evolution festival in Newcastle, England, and the Thirsty Ear Festival in his home state of New Mexico.

While working on his second album, Nels is exploring his new surroundings of New York City, as he recently moved to Brooklyn. He looks forward to learning the underground music of the subway and to hear how the wind changes from the oceanwide mesa to these urban rooftops. His new, yet untitled, record is produced by Todd Sickafoose (Ani DiFranco, Erin McCuewen) who also handles upright bass, and features Adam Levy (norah Jones, Amos Lee) on guitar, Michael Jorgenson (wilco) on Hammond & keys, and Ben Perowsky (John Laurie, John Cale, Ricky Lee Jones) on drums. His second record strays a bit of the standard troubador path, incorporating harps, sampled electronics, toy pianos, and a glass harmonica. (due out summer '07)
